Public garages often offered automobile services beyond before World War II. This garage likely sold gasoline and did minor repairs for the cars parked there. Pre-earthquake, Golden Gate Avenue was San Francisco's auto row. John Wieland's Brewing Co, was a small SF brewery that operated from the 1850's through the 1920's on 2nd Street (before operating in San Jose from the 1933-1956 ). Owned by famous San Francisco figure John Weiland, it was originally called the Philadelphia Brewery. Given the building's age and Prohibition, this ad is either from 1907-1920 or 1933-1956. The cigar price was cut from 10¢ to 5¢ in 1933 which would place this ad between 1933 and 1939 when prices rose back to 10¢. The Harvester Brand continued into the 1960’s and 70’s but with a different aesthetic to their advertising and packaging. Notice the very faint apartment sign towards the top of the cigar sign. Wonder what that originally said and when it was painted. Hotel Toronto – formerly Leiah Hotel, Wesley Hotel, and Hotel California. From a 1912 print ad " 'You can't describe her, sighs the Khedive, because there was never anything like her. She's a poem, a little mountain brook, a rose garden, a ----.' The P. Lorillard Company named their new Turkish blend cigarette Zubelda, in honor of the Khedive of Egypt's wife. Lorillard felt that their Zubelda was just like the lady, and claimed 'They taste like shooting stars. And their fragrance is like the Garden of Eden. They're as gracious and welcome as a long-absent sweetheart.' " Zubelda cigarettes debuted in October 1912 which would place this sign from around that period. The historic site of the Del Monte Plant No 1. Del Monte has been headquartered in San Francisco since 1916. The buildings was built in 1907 by the California Fruit Canners Association (which later became Del Monte Foods). the building was designed to be the world's largest cannery and at it's height employed 2,500 people. Between 1937 and 1963, the building was used as a warehouses and in 1967 it was converted to a "European-style marketplace" by developer Leonard Martin. Old sign on the side of the Anchor Steam Brewery. Anchor Steam was founded in 1871 by Gottlieb Brekle. Originally a saloon/Brewery on Russian Hill, it was renamed Anchor around 1876. After several locations/owners it moved to Potrero Hill in the 1930's. A really fascinating building with a plethora of ghost signs. As seen above, the main signs says Oriental DePoe Warehouse Company Bond and Free. The word DePoe has been painted over in red and the word oriental has not been maintained/refurbished. On the northern side are two other signs: a faded & partially missing Oriental Warehouse Co. sign (with no mention of DePoe. The building is a designated landmark, having been built in 1867 by The Pacific Mail Steamship Company as the primary distribution point for mail, coffee, tea, rice, and silk from Asia. Taken over by Southern Pacific Railroad Company in 1893, the company was sold to Grace Line in 1912 when Congress banned ships owned by railroads from using the Panama Canal. Subsequently sold to Robert Dollar and Company and the American President Lines, the Pacific Mail Steamship Co went out of business in 1949. Pre-Angel Island, the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s First Street Wharf was the area's major entry point for Chinese immigrants. With the creation of the Embarcadero in 1910 the wharf was demolished and immigration processing patterns changed for the area. Par-T-Pak, distributed by Nehi Beverage Company, was a line of quart, or "family sized" sodas sold between 1933 and 1954. These bottles were returnable and came in a variety of flavors such as Orange Soda, Ginger Ale, Tom Collins Mixer, Club Soda, Cherry Soda, Cola, Sparkling Water, and Root Beer. Another Par-T-Pak sign used to be on Valencia but was painted over. Sure, the sign is north facing and has been repainted at least once and gets no direct sunshine but it's AMAZING and so well preserved. Founded in 1931, Shasta Soda originally focused on alcoholic mixers, branching out into sodas in the mid 1950's. I had trouble deciphering the sign and/or finding any information on it. It seems to say something along the lines of Cobillard's/Gobillard's Cumax/Sumax/Climax 700. My guess is it's Cobillard's Cumax 700 and that it advertises an old nutritional supplement. While I didn't find anything terribly concrete I did find spattered info on the internet about CUMax-500 being a vitamin. Less well preserved than it's twin on Polk Street, this Wrigley's ad is nevertheless a great find for the eagle-eyed. A view of the building's backside can be seen here. Let's count the signs on this: Rainier Beer sign, Ceramic signs for Tree Tea Ceylon & Oolong and MJB Coffee why, A grocery store with free delivery featuring a telephone exchange number. "Cereal Mills were close relatives to flour mills and most familiar to our area was the Albers Bros. Milling Company. Albers began in Portland and moved north to Tacoma and Seattle. It was purchased by the Carnation Milk Company of Seattle when Carnation was unsuccessful in stopping Albers from using the trade name "Carnation Mush." Albers was able to keep its local mills going right into the 1960s and 1970s by concentrating on pet and animal foods. Today, owned by the Nestle Corporation, they are still in the animal food and cornmeal business but do not have a mill in Washington." Oh yes, and "mush" is basically like polenta or cream of wheat. From a 1912 print ad "'You can't describe her, sighs the Khedive, because there was never anything like her. She's a poem, a little mountain brook, a rose garden, a ----.' The P. Lorillard Company named their new Turkish blend cigarette Zubelda, in honor of the Khedive of Egypt's wife. Lorillard felt that their Zubelda was just like the lady, and claimed 'They taste like shooting stars. And their fragrance is like the Garden of Eden. They're as gracious and welcome as a long-absent sweetheart.' " Zubelda cigarettes debuted in October 1912 which would place this sign from around that period. Packets included a small oriental rug insert. From 1938 to 1990 the building was the site of Ahren's Brothers Pie (later renamed Ahren's Bakery and Coffee shop and finally Ahren's Bakery and Restaurant). Shawmut is the original Native American name for the neck of land on which the city of Boston, Massachusetts was founded. Anglicized, the word has also come to mean spring. The Shawmut was so named because many of its rooms have private baths, something of a luxury at the time the hotel was built." It is one of only a handful of hotels the YMCA built, and the only one in California. To increase occupancy, the hotel began accepting women in 1935 which dates the sign to 1935 or later. City Century Garage, now the 826 Valencia Tenderloin Center, on the corner of Leavenworth and Golden Gate. Due to fencing in the alley you can read the word GASOLINE but not the entirety of the sign. Public garages often offered automobile services beyond before World War II. This garage likely sold gasoline and did minor repairs for the cars parked there. Pre-earthquake, Golden Gate Avenue was San Francisco's auto row. John Wieland's Brewing Co, was a small SF brewery that operated from the 1850's through the 1920's on 2nd Street (before operating in San Jose from the 1933-1956 ). Owned by famous San Francisco figure John Weiland, it was originally called the Philadelphia Brewery. Given the building's age and Prohibition, this ad is either from 1907-1920 or 1933-1956. The cigar price was cut from 10¢ to 5¢ in 1933 which would place this ad between 1933 and 1939 when prices rose back to 10¢. The Harvester Brand continued into the 1960’s and 70’s but with a different aesthetic to their advertising and packaging. Notice the very faint apartment sign towards the top of the cigar sign. Wonder what that originally said and when it was painted. She's a poem, a little mountain brook, a rose garden, a ----.' The P. Lorillard Company named their new Turkish blend cigarette Zubelda, in honor of the Khedive of Egypt's wife. Lorillard felt that their Zubelda was just like the lady, and claimed 'They taste like shooting stars. And their fragrance is like the Garden of Eden. They're as gracious and welcome as a long-absent sweetheart.' " Zubelda cigarettes debuted in October 1912 which would place this sign from around that period.
